Mini’s Forgotten Buggy: Immaculate Moke Hits eBay

Classics, Culture, European, Oddities  /   /  By Bradley Berman

The Mini Moke is a lovable 1960s cult vehicle. It was originally designed as a lightweight military vehicle that could be dropped into combat by parachute, and even picked up and carried by four soldiers. When the British Army failed to show interest in the innovative vehicle—and its low power and poor ground clearance proved to be less than practical—the Moke was re-born as a fun beach buggy. Can you see yourself hitting the beach in this rare mint-condition example now for sale on eBay?

The first Moke prototype was designed in 1959 by Sir Alec Issignonis, the legendary designer for Mini. It went through different iterations over the following five years, before production started in 1964. At that time, buyers could buy it in any color—as long as it was Spruce Green. It came standard with only one seat (for the driver) and one windshield wiper—with other gear as options. The Mini Moke features a modest 845 cc engine and 10-inch wheels.

Nearly 15,000 Mokes were produced in the U.K. between 1964 and 1968, but few stayed in Britain. Most remaining models are in service today on beaches in far-flung locales—from the Caribbean to the Seychelles. But it’s very rare to find one in the United States, especially in the immaculate shape of the example now up for sale on eBay.

The 1968 model has only 229 miles on its original Mini engine. It’s “murdered out,” according to seller, with a matte black exterior and interior, heated seats, and water-resistant Bluetooth-enabled stereo system. That sound like the perfect blend of old, new, mean, and extremely funky.
