A Legendary ’98 Toyota Supra Turbo, In Nearly Stock Form

Asian, Classics  /   /  By Ben Hsu

The Toyota Supra is an iconic Japanese sports car, and the fourth-generation model is the pinnacle of the breed. Toyota sold that coveted version in Japan from 1993 to 2002.

Unfortunately, the Japanese automaker stopped selling the landmark gen-four Supra in the United States after the 1998 model year. Yet, one of those ’98 Supra models—among the last ones to reach our shores—is for sale now on eBay.

Movie Stardom and Skyrocketing Prices

The Supra and its 320-horsepower twin-turbo straight-six engine took enthusiasts by surprise. In a 1993 road test, Car and Driver clocked its 0-60 time at 4.6 seconds. That was far quicker than rivals from Nissan and Mitsubishi—and beat exotics like the Ferrari 348.

The Supra got even more competitive as it aged. The engine was insanely overbuilt. So builders using widely available aftermarket parts cranked the cast-iron-block 2JZ engine to 500 horsepower without much effort. With a little more work and expense, modders can push output to 1,000 horsepower and higher.

A performance-oriented enhanced 1994 Supra Turbo sold on eBay in November 2021 for $150,000. Its builders pushed the Supra’s output to 1,370 horsepower.

That famous scene in the original The Fast & The Furious was no joke. A modified Supra smoked a Ferrari in a coastal drag race, expanding the Supra’s fandom.

In 2019, a 1994 Supra broke the six-figure barrier when it sold for $121,000—a record-setting price at the time. Detractors were outraged by such a high price tag for “just a Toyota.” However, two years later, a nearly identical one sold for $201,000.

The actual star car from The Fast & The Furious crossed the block last year for a mind-blowing $550,000.

Almost Completely Stock

These days, six-figure Supras are no longer shocking. However, as expected, the high-dollar sales typically go to low-mileage unmolested examples. Those can be hard to find, considering how many were converted to drag racers, show cars, and street racers over the years.

The seller of the ’98 Supra on eBay says that it’s stock, except for the addition of a Bluetooth-ready touchscreen stereo and a backup camera. Of course, many modern drivers will appreciate those convenient tech add-ons. But the Buy-It-Now price of $150,000 places the car in a collector category that puts a premium on original factory equipment and specs. Then again, returning the Supra to OEM condition would be easy enough.

A more important factor could be its automatic transmission. In some drag racing applications, an automatic may be preferable. However, the six-speed manual transmission-equipped models are typically more desirable.

Its Imperial Jade Mica paint color is less common than red, white, or silver. That shade of green feels very 1990s. And like olive green from the 70s, it could be considered charmingly period-appropriate or slightly dated, depending on tastes.

Toyota Longevity

The 68,742 miles on the odometer is nothing for a 2JZ engine. Toyota recommends a timing belt interval of 60,000 miles. As long as the Supra owners give routine maintenance to the stock motor, it should be bulletproof for many years.

The Buy-It-Now price might seem high for this 1998 Toyota Supra Turbo for sale on eBay. (Starting bids will be below that mark.)

But take note: Breaking the $100,000 mark for a Supra might have been unthinkable a few years ago. Since then, Supras have surpassed that barrier many times. And those values show no signs of slowing down.
