What to Expect at 2013 Detroit Auto Show

Auto Show season is in full gear as the first show of the New Year, the Detroit Auto Show, is set to kick off with a press preview beginning on January 14th and our eBay Motors team will be there to cover the show. Officially called the North American International Auto Show, like in years past, you can expect to see a number of production vehicle debuts as well as several concept car unveilings at Detroit’s COBO Center this year.

In addition to the production and concept car introductions, the 2013 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year winners will also be announced at the show. Finalists for the award include the Cadillac ATS, Ford Fusion and Honda Accord in the Car category; the Ford C-MAX, Mazda CX-5 and Ram 1500 are finalists in the Truck/Utility category. Winners will be announced on the first day of the show, but to hold you over until then, here’s a preview of some of the most anticipated Detroit Auto Show debuts.

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette
Though GM has not released any official photos of the seventh generation Corvette, automotive blogs and car magazines have been abuzz with supposedly leaked images and drawings of the C7 in recent months. Scheduled to debut the night before the Auto Show begins, GM has confirmed that the base C7 will bear the name “Stingray,” and the base engine—a 6.2L LT1—will not be mid-mounted. As far as technology goes, it appears Chevy has made the transition from the traditional instrument panel of past models to digital gauges in the 2014 Corvette.

The new Cadillac ELR plug-in hybrid
Since announcing plans for the ELR, GM has done a pretty good job keeping details about it under wraps. However, in a recent press release, GM distributed several camouflaged spy shots of the plug-in hybrid. The automaker describes the ELR as combining “dramatic design with industry-leading extended range vehicle technology in a unique luxury coupe.” Expected to be based on the design of the 2009 Converj Concept, the Cadillac ELR will be built alongside the Chevy Volt and utilize the same electric drive system as the popular EV.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan
In an attempt to attract younger buyers, Mercedes-Benz has been developing a compact sedan called the CLA. The CLA will be the smallest Mercedes-Benz available for purchase in the United States and is expected to take its interior design cues from the German automaker’s A-Class hatchback. While no official images have been released, Mercedes has confirmed that the CLA will feature their newest 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

Infiniti’s new entry-level Q50 sedan
In addition to announcing a revamped naming system for its vehicles, Infiniti also recently announced the production of a replacement for their outgoing G37 entry-level sedan. The new vehicle will be called the Q50 and is rumored to be based on Infiniti’s LE Concept. So far, only images of the car’s headlights have been leaked so it should be one of Detroit’s more revealing debuts.

The 2014 Lexus IS
Though the 2013 IS only recently appeared in American showrooms, Lexus already plans on debuting the next model year IS in Detroit. Described by Toyota’s luxury arm as “inspired by the acclaimed LF-CC concept,” and incorporating “design cues of the LFA,” Lexus claims the 2014 IS will have both a completely redesigned interior and exterior.

Other production vehicles scheduled for debut in Detroit are the 2014 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible, BMW M6 Gran Coupe, BMW Z4, Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra, Maserati Quattroporte, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, MINI John Cooper Works Paceman, and Audi’s 2014 R8 and 2013 RS5 Cabriolet. Several limited edition or performance tuned models will make appearances in Detroit as well, including the 2013 Chrysler 300 Motown Edition and the 2013 Dodge Dart GT. As far as concepts go, expect to hear a lot about Hyundai’s HCD-14, Toyota’s Furia, Lincoln’s MKC, Acura’s MDX, Honda’s CUV, BMW’s 4 Series and concepts of the 2015 Ford F150, the 2014 Nissan Versa and a 7-seater from Volkswagen that will fit in the German automaker’s lineup between the Touareg and the Tiguan.
