Likes:

  • Exterior design is clean and sporty
  • Athletic handling combined with its high performance V6 add up to a sport coupe that is undoubtedly fun to drive
  • Variable steering feels light in the parking lot but firms up on the highway
  • Adults over 6 feet tall feel comfortable getting in and out of the car
  • Navigation and entertainment console is very friendly and easy to use

Dislikes:

  • Clutch engagement too high
  • Traction control kicks in too early
  • Back seats can’t fit much more than two kids in child seats

The Infiniti G37 IPL is taking on a challenging task of balancing between performance and luxury level comfort. We believe it is more than successful in achieving that goal. The IPL drives and behaves like a sports car thanks to the 348 HP that allows it to be quick off the line as well as at high speeds.

The sport-tuned suspension and the adaptable steering round up the driving experience to a fast and exciting fun ride.

Tall people shouldn’t be afraid about fitting into Infiniti’s sport coupe. Our driver at 6 foot 3 three inches was pleasantly surprised with a spacious cockpit that had lots of headroom.

Driving Impressions
Our test car was equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. The IPL lineup also includes a seven-speed automatic transmission version. The manual version comes with short-throw shifter that did not do enough to compensate the high engagement point of the clutch. Overall the shifting was a bit jumpy and generally slower than we expected. We agree with the editors at Edmunds.com for saying “…the six-speed manual transmission, which suffers from a clutch with heavy effort level and abrupt engagement.”

The IPL class competitors include the Audi S5 and the Cadillac CTS. While it may have the “weaker” engine of that group, the IPL’s 3.7 V6 engine is capable of providing more than enough speed, power, and agility that make the drive very sporty and enjoyable.

The IPL is not just a luxury vehicle with high performance aspirations thanks to its quick acceleration of the line, its solid feel at high speed, and its responsive steering. While the ride was not as smooth as one would expect from a luxury car, it was one of the smoothest rides we had in a performance vehicle. The handling on the IPL is very consistent and even on sharp turns in higher speeds the vehicle maintained its grip on the road with very little body lean.

Interior Comfort and Ergonomics
The interior design is one of the G37’s strongest points; the seats are super comfortable and are easily adjustable. The navigation/entertainment console is nice and friendly; however, it is positioned in a way that makes it challenging to operate quickly while waiting a stoplight light.

The IPL is definitely built with an eye for the details and it seems like the team at Infiniti spent a good amount of time on perfecting the small details and the finish of the panels, instruments and consoles.

Access to the second row was very easy for a small child and was more than reasonable even for an adult. The problem is there is less legroom in the back seat of the coupe than an economy seat on Delta.

Conclusion
We believe that at just below $50,000 the IPL is a good deal for someone looking to buy a performance luxury coupe. Our colleagues at Decisive Magazine share a similar thought “…Given Infiniti’s cars already offer significant bang for the buck performance-wise, tweaking them adds considerable value to the proposition. Particularly since Infiniti consciously makes strides to keep pricing below fifty grand.” [http://www.decisivemagazine.com/infiniti-g37-ipl-review].
