Gas Monkey Garage Car #4: 1974 AMC Gremlin

You may have seen on the show that we got this little monster in the shop a week or so ago. And no, I’m not talking about Tom. I’m talking about this 1974 Gremlin X.

Now why the hell did I buy a Gremlin you might be wondering? Well, the Gremlin X is actually a pretty collectible car.

The X package was introduced in 1971 and featured unique body styling, badges, special road wheels, bucket seats and most importantly the 304 cubic inch (5.0L) V8 engine. For an economy car in the 70s, this little guy packed a punch.

We found this little car on the interweb in California. I thought it was pretty cool, and my sister Daphne used to drive one, so I thought I would get it an taunt her with it.

I don’t want to do too much to this one because surprisingly, these cars are pretty collectible! That is going to be up to the next owner to put their unique spin on it whether they restore it or turn it into a dragster or something. We basically want to get this one running, driving and stopping and bring that paint back to life.

I appreciate when they are kept all AMC. I believe they had Chrysler auto trans and if you look you can find the 401 in some Jeeps. Good luck guys.

I had a ’73 and I loved that beast. Mine was yellow with black stripes and Levi’s denim seats. And don’t forget the 8-track. Got the best gas mileage on the planet. How many cars do you know that can go from Dallas to Memphis on a tank of gas? A Gremlin can! I really miss Bonzo.

  4. Bill Hicks says:

My first car was a 1973 Gremlin X with the inline six. I currently own a 1978 Gremlin X with a 5.0L Mustang engine. Gas Monkeys Rock!!!

Taunt her with it? You just knocked it out of the park with the ugly OEM car contest. She’s hiding under desk isn’t she? LOL

Don’t know how I got on this blog but my first ride was a brand new 1973 Gremlin X with the Levi interior. Maxi blue with dark stripes. Big six, automatic and a/c. Naturally, I added an 8 track not too long after. I have an artistic bend and replicated the X logo on the inside of the rear glass with white pinstripe tape. Another Gremlin X owner saw me on the road and followed me several miles to find out where he could buy the window decal? I had to tell him it was one of a kind. Took a lot of pride in that car as a kid. Still think of it with fondness to this day.

  8. Dane says:

How much are you guys thinking of for a price on the sweet beast? Hit me up with a number . I have a 6 year old son and when it comes time for him to drive I think he would love it.

Quirky little car but it deserves to be restored (just the “X” models, lets not start a trend here).

I just wanted let you guys know that this car is currently on its way to Australia (after a drunk bid), not 100% sure but may become a burnout machine.
