Ford F-150 Raptor SVT

eBay Catch of the Day: Ford F-150 Raptor SVT

“Born and raised on the grueling trails of the Baja.” Ford apparently heard the prayers of truck buyers asking for something they could race off-road. Or just maybe someone high up at Ford believed in a forthcoming zombie apocalypse — and wanted to make a truck for those hoping to survive.

Whatever the reason the SVT Raptor debuted as a 2010 model with a grille, hood and front fender vents and flares much different from the stock F-150.

Ford also jacked up the suspension to allow 13.4 inches of wheel travel in the rear and 11.2 in the front. The trucks featured a technical innovation — internal triple bypass shocks. Fox Racing partnered with Ford and designed them to resist bottoming out in desert terrains at high speeds. It was the first time they appeared on a production truck. BF Goodrich 35-inch tires fit in the expansive wheel wheels.

Ford SVT knew they needed to put some power under the hood to compete in off-road events. The first models came standard with the 5.4-liter V8, but the 6.2-liter was a $3k option. The 2011 Raptors came only with the 411-horsepower 6.2 liter. Andy and Scott McMillin won the 2011 Baja 1000 driving a Raptor. They averaged 47.12 miles an hour.

To match the ruggedness of the suspension and drivetrain, Ford didn’t allow any sissy paint colors. Race Red, Blue Flame Metallic, Oxford White, Ingot Silver Metallic and Tuxedo Black Metallic are the five options.

Some people are so crazy that even factory racing vehicles aren’t enough. The good folks at Hennessey make a kit to turn your Raptor into a VelociRaptor, like this 2012 F-150 Raptor. A supercharger, intercooler and programming jump the power from 411 horsepower up to 600.

Just the thing for quickening those runs across an arid, zombie-infested waste land.
