2012 was a huge year here at eBay Motors. From original series to eBay Motors Racing to new car reviews and breaking news, we saw a lot of everything automotive going on in 2012, and we’re expecting nothing but more excitement as we move into 2013. Before all of that, though, kick your feet up and have a look back at some of the highlights of the year at eBay Motors. Here is your 2012 eBay Motors year in review:
In January we took a look at the Fisker Karma, literally the beginning of a year of focus on green cars here at the site (more on that later). We also reviewed the 2001-05 Lexus IS 300 in January, one of many reviews we did this year that look at not only at new-to-market vehicles, but also the older models in which many of our eBay Motors readers have an interest. In March, the drivers of eBay Motors’ British Touring Car Championship team began the 2012 season in their BMWs.
In May we gave you a backstage look at the goings-on at the ALMS race at Laguna Seca. May also saw the passing of automotive icon Carroll Shelby, and we reflected on the legacy of this giant of American racing and car culture.
June was an especially busy month for eBay Motors. We launched the eBay Motors Green Driving Center, with driving tips and reviews aimed at maximizing your fuel economy. June also saw a new version of the eBay Motors iPhone App, and the exciting eBay Motors New Car Revolution Devolution Sale, with a slew of new cars being listed on eBay with their prices dropping by the hour until they were sold. We also celebrated the birthday of Sir Jackie Stewart in June, and returned to Sonoma Raceway at Laguna Seca with the eBay Fan Zone for the NASCAR Toyota/Save Mart 350.
eBay Motors was lucky enough to be invited to the Jaguar Alive Driving Experience in July. We also got to know eBay Motors Global Rallycross Driver David Binks a little better. But the big news here at eBay Motors in July was the kickoff of our original series BUILT from eBay. We challenged four teams of highly-skilled car builders to create a state-of-the-art ride using only parts, accessories, and even cars bought here on eBay.
In August, we were a little excited about NASA’s Mars Curiosity Rover and made no effort to contain that excitement. In our defense, Curiosity is an amazing effort toward greater understanding of the red planet and deserves all the attention it gets. Car reviews included the 2013 Mazda CX-5 and an early preview of the impressive all-new 2014 Aston Martin Vanquish. Racing action included the eBay Motors Hart & Huntington team tackling off-road racing under the lights at Glen Helen, eBay Motors’ presence at the GoPro IndyCar Grand Prix at Sonoma, and the insanely cool Shelby Cobra race at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.
Among a litany of stories in September, we debuted a new look for the eBay Motors Blog – and not a moment too soon, as the month would be one of the busiest of the year. Our Bring A Trailer 1963 Chevrolet Corvette was making progress, and the BUILT from eBay teams finished working their magic ahead of fan favorite voting, an appearance at SEMA, and the auctioning of the project cars themselves. Our partnership with Sonoma Raceway at Laguna Seca saw eBay Motors’ presence at the Continental Tire Sports Car Festival and Rolex Sports Car Series Race. Our friends at eBay Motors UK teamed up with Edd China to turn a milk float into a race car in the BTCC Mechanics Challenge, and we welcomed Justin Bell to the eBay Motors Blog team as he hosted a new season of The World’s Fastest Car Show. September also saw the launch of The Finders; a series of posts where auto experts shed light on new and exciting products. Reviews included the 2013 Ford Fusion and the 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth.
We started October with a spin in the 2013 Aston Martin V8 Vantage, and things just picked up from there. The World’s Fastest Car Show saw Justin Bell tear up the desert in a Ford F-150 Raptor and test drive a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, and we remembered Justin’s friend and champion racer Paul Brown. The Grassroots Motorsports $2012 Challenge provided high-dollar excitement on a budget, and The Finders spotted some exceptionally cool cars listed on eBay. In October eBay Motors began the Educational 101 Series, posts written to give the readers basic information to better understand aspects of autos of all types. In a month where we saw a Toyota Tundra pull the Space Shuttle Endeavor through the streets of Los Angeles, and the touching story of Ed Church reuniting with his motorcycle after 32 years, the biggest event was the annual SEMA show in Las Vegas. eBay Motors was on hand to interact with our fans and unveil the finished BUILT from eBay cars.
SEMA carried over into the first week of November, and the eBay Motors booth hosted Adam Carolla’s podcast and we met our 2012 People’s Picks Sweepstakes winners. eBay Giving Works auctioned off the Powered by Women 2013 Mustang for the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund and we wrapped up the show with a comprehensive look back before leaving the desert. eBay’s Giving Works also facilitated the auction of the Usain Bolt edition Nissan GT-R in one of the coolest charity auctions of the year. eBay Motors drove the cool new 2013 Cadillac XTS and the slick Infiniti G37 IPL. The Hart & Huntington Racing Team finished the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series in spectacular fashion. eBay Motors’ The World’s Fastest Car Show saw Justin Bell thrashing a new BMW M5 around the Laguna Seca track and The Finders helped prepare your car (and yourself) for the coming winter. We also introduced eBay Garage, allowing our eBay Motors fans to share their own cars and check out the rides of other users, connecting the community like never before. The month ended with the start of the Los Angeles Auto Show, with The Finders spying the coolest cars of the show, and us getting our first looks at the new Porsche Cayman and Jaguar’s new high-powered offerings.
The Los Angeles Auto Show coverage continued into December, when we looked at some of the most fascinating concept cars present, along with another visit from Adam Corolla to our eBay Garage, exclusive interviews with Henrik Fisker and Director of BMW Group Design Adrian van Hooydonk, and a close up look at the massively powerful Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series. We got to ride in cars as diverse as the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek and the 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302. The BTCC Mechanic’s Challenge crew broke a world record in their milk float, and Justin Bell recreated the iconic car-chase from Bullitt. As we entered the holiday shopping season, eBay Motors and our friends at Auto Guide had advice for the perfect gift for the gearhead in your life.
All in all, an amazing year for us at eBay Motors. Thanks for helping make our 2012 so special, and here’s looking forward to even more in 2013!
