Dodge entered the Trans Am racing world in 1970 with the Challenger T/A, with a total of 2,399 units built that year. Alongside the AAR Cuda, the T/A helped bring the Trans Am fight to Ford’s Mustang Boss 302 and Chevrolet’s Camaro Z/28, both on the street and the track.
Racing versions of the T/A ran high-revving destroked 340 V8s on the track, but street versions featured a more standard 340 fitted with triple 2-bbl carburetors and rated at 290 hp. You could also get either a 4-speed manual or automatic transmission, and other standard features included megaphone exhaust dumping in front of the rear wheels, matte black hood, and front disc brakes.
This T/A is said to have matching numbers, 49,000 original miles, and all original sheet metal. The seller says it was completely restored, had no rust, and is one of one in Go Mango Orange with a 4-speed, a black vinyl top, the AO1 light package, and its heavy list of options.
Just 18 1970 Dodge Challenger T/As have sold on eBay Motors in the past few years, with average prices topping $80k for the best examples. This car has both provenance and a great look, and the $72k Buy It Now price isn’t out of line if it’s as nice as it looks. See the listing here.
