eBay Listing: 1968 Amphicar 770

The Amphicar wasn’t a great car and it wasn’t a great boat. But if you’re in the market for a slow speed cruiser that you can literally drive into a lake (and back out again), there’s no better choice.

Amphicars were built from 1961–68 with an estimated 3,878 total units produced. The original four-cylinder 1,147-cc Triumph engine pumped out all of 43 horsepower when new. That enabled the car to hit seven knots on the water and 70 mph on land, hence the “770” moniker. Anything more than that and you’ll need a sail or a long downhill stretch.

This 1968 example was “pampered, garaged and used sparingly… by the same owner since new!” The seller says the paint and interior are in nice condition. Some “superficial” rust is on the bottom of the quarter panels, which should be an eye-opener — if you’re interested in this car, better have this closely inspected, as rust in one of these can turn a fun afternoon into a soggy one in a hurry. Recent work includes brakes, starter and transmission.

Five Amphicars sold on eBay Motors in the past year, averaging $39k for good examples and $56k for excellent ones. See how this one is doing here.

I think there was Nash car that also went in the water. I knew of another one but can’t think of the name of it. Hey, how about speed racers car? That went under the water too.

  4. eBay Motors says:

Good memory, do you have any photos of that Nash car?

I know during our past War they had an AMPHIBIAN Vehicles called THE D.U.C.K. They now run tours down in Branson, Missouri for tours which was rather both a learning expereince and enjoyable
