eBay Listing: 1967 Datsun 520 Pickup

by

They’re not fast, safe or powerful, but vintage Japanese pickups do make great light-duty haulers. They’re reliable, economical, easy to drive, offer great visibility and boast tons of personality for their size. In short, they’re the perfect thing to declare to the world, “I’m not compensating for anything.”

They’ll run forever if mechanically kept up, but rust and wrecks killed them off over the decades, and pre-1970 examples are a rare sight today. This ’67 Datsun wears California blue plates and looks like a solid example. It’s now primered gray on the exterior, but everywhere else, you can clearly discern the original code 546 Gray Green — one of our all-time favorite colors for any car.

Fresh parts include new alternator, starter, shocks, tires and 5-speed transmission — a very worthwhile upgrade. The seller says “everything works,” but the car has a vibration issue at speeds over 40 mph. At the $1,600 opening bid, we would just buy it, take it straight to my local shop and let them diagnose it.

Then we’d ditch the farm-truck rear bumper, give it a quick respray, throw a Mexican blanket over the shredded bench seat, and go haul some furniture.
