Of the four vehicles involved in the BUILT from eBay challenge, the ’66 El Camino chosen by Team Lowrider’s Duran’s Quality Painting may have been the one in the worst shape on the outset. When it was delivered, the El Camino’s driveshaft was in its truck bed and the engine was completely done for. The close-knit crew at Duran’s would have to make smart eBay Motors parts purchases to make the build right; it’s safe to say they did a great job.
Today the Team Lowrider El Camino looks like a brand new car, and with a new 350 crate motor as its heart and no less than 18 coats of House of Color candy apple red paint perfectly applied and shining bright, it’s not unfair to consider it one.
That new V8 has only 15 miles logged, with a pitch-perfect interior featuring a chrome tilt column, Dakota digital dash gauges, a Retro Sound stereo system with Kenwood speakers and an mp3/iPod hookup, and new trim everywhere. Other new features include: stunning 100-spoke wire wheels, front disk brakes, a rebuilt automatic transmission, a brand new ash wood bed, new Edelbrock carburetor and intake, new HID headlights, and too many more new pieces and parts to list here. Let’s just say that a remarkable amount of work went into the El Camino in a blisteringly quick amount of time.
How well-turned out the El Camino is, before even taking the amount of time for the build into account, is a tribute to Rico Duran and the amazing staff at Duran’s Quality Painting. Duran’s skills are legendary, and are passed through the family of Duran’s Quality Painting. The overall numbers of younger people looking to make a living in the auto business is shrinking dramatically, however. To encourage those young people looking to make a career in cars, the Team Lowrider El Camino auction will benefit the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund, which offers assistance to college students pursuing careers in the automotive field.
