This may look like your secretary’s commuter car, but it isn’t your typical white 5.0 Mustang. It’s one of 232 Cobra R SCCA racers. Radio delete, no a/c, and no back seat make this less-than-friendly for the daily grind, but that was never this car’s purpose. It’s a factory race car in a Mustang wrapper, and finding examples like this in good condition is hard to do.
Only drivers with approved racing licenses could purchase the 1995 Cobra R new through a Ford SVT dealer. All 232 immediately available for sale were purchased within 48 hours of announcement.
The ’95 Cobra R was the first 351-powered Mustang since 1974. Ford shoehorned it in the factory engine compartment, but a domed hood was needed to clear the tall intake. The 5.8 pumps out 300 horsepower — 60 more than the regular Mustang Cobra.
This example wasn’t used often as a racer — it only has 9,302 miles. Since the car had some down time, at least one past owner thought some areas needed improvement. It is still white with tan interior, like all 250 produced, but slotted rotors, heavy-duty hoses and a high performance ignition replace the original components. Steeda springs, sway bars and control arms were also added.
The seller has set the Buy It Now at $22,500. The ’95 Cobra R cost $37,599 new, and typical price guide valuations range from $23k for good examples to $35k for pristine ones. Click here to see the listing.
