This 1984 Renault R5 Turbo 2 can zip from 0–60 mph in 6.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 126 mph. But straight-line speed isn’t what Renault had in mind. Brick-like aerodynamics and little torque (159 lb-ft at 3,250 rpm) don’t lend well to drag racing. A short chassis with 40/60 weight distribution and a high-revving, turbocharged 1.4-liter proved formidable blasting up and down hills. If drivers weren’t careful however, the car had a tendency to turn 180 degrees quickly.
This red rocket only has 21,500 miles on it and is in remarkable condition. The interior is said to be all original, except the roll cage, carpet and floor mats. The latter two were made from stock style carpet. Underneath, the car is clean with no rust evident. Custom Gotti wheels replace the stock turbine-style ones, and are in a more common tire size than the metric originals. This won’t leave a new owner stuck with the ’80s tire technology of the stock Michelin TRX radials.
Upgraded parts in the suspension, cooling and steering systems have come from a U.K. champion R5 rally driver. This includes Bilstein shocks, aluminum radiator, dual fans and steering rack stiffeners. A race header and larger intercooler were installed, in addition to a new head gasket and fuel injectors. The seller still has the original parts (header, shocks, radiator, etc) in case the new owner wants to return the car to stock form.
An estimated 500 Turbo 2s — out of 3,576 produced — were imported state-side. Only 11 1980–85 R5s sold on eBay Motors in the last five years. Good examples averaged over $18k and excellent ones averaged almost $30k. Click here to see the auction listing of this rare French rally car.
