1974 AMC Hornet Sportabout

There can’t be more than a handful of Hornets surviving today, and these “Sportabout” station wagons must be among the least common. Much maligned over the decades for their styling (and reliability), AMCs were never considered collectible, and most were just driven to death and forgotten. Today, intact examples of any AMC are rarely seen, and their simple styling now has an honest, nostalgic appeal that is only getting better with age.

This Sportabout looks like a well cared for daily driver. It has now been mechanically gone over and carefully detailed to show off its well earned patina. The seller describes it as a good runner that will cruise at highway speeds “all day” and that “everything works.” All it appears to need is hubcaps.

The very best AMC Hornets sold on eBay Motors in the past three years averaged $5,800, showing that they have yet to catch the attention of collectors, but I think this one’s simple body contours, ice-blue paint and green vinyl interior evoke the malaise-era 1970s with more charm and optimism than most of the more common Big Three-built barges.

Hornet with v8, had upgrades at time to get pretty good horse power , six cylinder cars were poor, had to have v8 option, to sustain value. Gremlin is still my favorite with LEVI , jean interior, and a 390 v8, many went to big block chevy motors and made great drag cars.
