The ’70 Chevelle SS is without a doubt one of the most iconic muscle cars ever built by Chevrolet. It was arguably the cleanest design of the whole 1968-1972 A-body series, and the legendary range of big-block engines, headlined by the 450-hp 454-ci LS6, were true terrors on the street.
This Chevelle is said to be an original SS 396 car, and the seller makes a compelling argument in its favor, noting an SS dash with a 5,500 redline tachometer, a 3.31-ratio rear end, and beefed up suspension components with boxed lower control arms and a factory rear sway bar. The seller supplies the VIN and cowl tag details for further breakdown as well.
But as with most barn finds, there is plenty of work that’ll need to be done to get this into decent shape. The factory engine and TH400 transmission are long gone, and the seller mentions the quarter panels and trunk floor need to be replaced. There are also some rust issues from a now removed vinyl top which will need to be addressed, especially around the rear window.
Over the past year, 38 1968-1972 Chevelle SS 396s have been sold on eBay Motors, with good examples fetching $30k and excellent ones reaching $46k, so depending on the cost of the restoration, this could end up being very well bought. See where the bidding is here.
