Crosley’s best production year was 1948. Over 29,000 cars were made, 23,489 of which were tiny station wagons. This yellow wagon was recently inspected and said to be in running condition.
The car has the usual dents and dings and the seller thinks the car has been repainted once. It also has spent a lot of time fading in the sun; notice the contrast in one picture from where the rear license plate sat to the rest of the vehicle. The seller bought it as a project — now it’s a new buyer’s turn. But it won’t win any awards in its current condition.
And you’re not going to take the flag at any drag races, either. The Cobra 44-ci engine that originally came in Crosleys produced a very modest 26.5 hp. Most interestingly, they were sheet metal blocks that eventually developed holes in the cylinder walls due to electrolysis. Cast iron blocks were made available in 1949, and many were installed in the earlier year cars.
The seller says the car is mechanically all-original, to the best of his knowledge, but I doubt it. The 3-speed manual is a non-synchromesh transmission, so you’d better brush up on your double clutching skills.
Driving this Crosley won’t be smooth or easy. But its unique looks and the attention it brings every time you take it out will be more than worth the effort. Just stay off of the highway.
